How to Install Windows XP using Pen Drive

At present netbooks have generally no internal optical drive. So you have to join external optical drive separately with your notebook. But suppose you have no external optical drive or you have bad quality external optical drive. What will you do? In this situation if needed to change the operating system for any reason you can do that using your pen drive or other USB storage device.
In this post I am describing in details how to install windows XP operating system from pen drive.

To install windows XP in your PC or laptop you need at least a 2 Gigabyte pen drive. Besides you can use other USB storage devices like portable hard disk, MP3/MP4 player etc. Now take a look at the following step by step process:

1. Download a third party software from Internet named "Komku-SP-usb.exe". Download link
Size of this file is only 1.47 MB. After download run the file and hit Install button. Then the software pack will be automatically installed in your C drive opening a new folder named "Komku". In this pack three different softwares are available:
-BootSect.exe
-PeToUSB
-usb_prep8

2. Now connect your pendrive to your usb port, go to "C:\Komku\PeToUSB" folder and double click on "PeToUSB.exe". A window will open. Go to top of this window, from "Destination Drive" section select "USB Removable" radio button, from "Format Section" put tick mark on the box named "Enable Disk Format". In the right side, put tick mark on only "Quick Format" and "Enable LBA (FAT 16x)", the rest will remain blank.

Give a name according to your choice (i.e. XP AVATAR) in the "Drive Label" field. Frist click on Start and then Yes. A message will be shown like this: "All existing volumes and data on that disk will be lost. Are You Sure You Want To Continue?" If you press Yes button now all the data of your pendrive or usb storage drive will be lost. So be careful about it.

3. You have to run the command prompt now. For this go to Start\Run, type cmd and hit Enter. A window will appear. Type here the following lines and after every line press Enter.

cd\
cd C:
cd Komku
cd bootsect
Here cd is a shortcut command for "Change Directory". It is used to go to the root directory or primary drive.

4. Do not close the previous window. Type nt52 I: in this window and press Enter (here I is your usb drive's location, it may vary pc to pc). Now your pendrive will formatted and necessary files will be copied to your pendrive to make it bootable. In the window you will see two messages like "Successfully updated FAT filesystem bootcode" and "Bootcode was succesfully updated on all targeted volumes". Do not close your command prompt window, just go to next step.

5. Add the following lines in the command prompt.
cd..
cd usb_prep8
usb_prep8
Now your usb_prep8.exe file will run, automatically perform some task and show this message after finishing "Press any key to continue...". Then press any key from your keyboard and you will see the welcome screen of usb_prep8. Here you will see the following commands:
Prepares Windows XP LocalSource for Copy to USB-Drive:

0) Change Type of USB-Drive, currently [USB-stick]
1) Change XP Setup Source Path, currently []
2) Change Virtual TempDrive, currently [T:]
3) Change Target USB-Drive Letter, currently []
4) Make New Tempimage with XP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive
5) Use Existing Tempimage with XP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive
6) Change Log File - Simple OR Extended, currently [Simple]
7) Quit
Enter your choice: _

Now if you enter windows XP cd to your optical drive and hit Enter after pressing 1 to the previous window then a window will appear named "Browse for Folder". From there select the optical drive where you have entered the cd.

If you press 3 and hit Enter you will see these lines: "Please give Target USB-Drive Letter e.g type U" and "Enter Target USB-Drive Letter:". Now see your pendrive's drive letter, type that and press Enter.

If you press 4 and hit Enter then within few times all the necessary files for windows xp installation will be copied to your pendrive from cd. Before finishing some messages can be shown:

"WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE T: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?"
Press Y and hit Enter.

"Copy Temp Drive Files to USB-Drive in about 15 minutes = Yes OR STOP = End Program = No"
Press Yes button from dialog box.

"Would you like USB-stick to be preferred Boot Drive *:"
Press Yes button from dialog box.

"Would you like to unmount the Virtual Drive?"
Press Yes button from dialog box.

Your pendrive is bootable now and ready to install windows xp.

6. To install operating system from bootable usb storage device you will have to make your usb hard disk bootable from BIOS. In the following I am showing this process using AMI BIOS.

While starting your PC you have to enter BIOS pressing "Delete" or "F2" or "F8" key according to your motherboard. For AMI BIOS you have to press Delete key in this case. Go to "Boot" tab. Below the "Boot Device Priority" option, select USB HDD / USB ZIP as the 1st Boot Device and Hard Disk as the 2nd Boot Device, save this process pressing F10 and exit from here.

Now you can install windows XP operating system to your PC or netbook from pen drive.
